VVS is committed to improving the quality of regional public transportation within its service area on an ongoing basis. This not only strengthens customer loyalty, it also provides opportunities for attracting new riders to public transit. Many improvements have already been implemented successfully in past years through close cooperation between the public sector and transit organizations: The commuter train has been expanded to become the backbone of regional transit, and a modern light rail rapid transit system was created in Stuttgart. Two subordinate lines have been modernized, and another - the Schönbuch line - has been reactivated with resounding success. The bus network within Stuttgart and in the other districts is dense and efficient, and is operated for the most part with modern busses. In order to optimize the linkage with individual transportation, the number of P&R parking spaces at rail stations has grown from 1800 in the year 1978 to 16,000 in the year 2002.
