Schlossplatz Stuttgart
The Royal Square (Schlossplatz) is surrounded by the historical buildings of the new and the old castle, the House of Art and the Königsbau. Formerly a parade ground for inductees, it is nowadays the calling card of the state capital.
Star-shaped paths cross the 30 metres high Jubilee Column which is crowned by the statue of Concordia (weighing 100 hundredweights). The column was erected in 1841 to celebrate the 25th crown jubilee of King Wilhelm I. Beautiful reliefs show battle scenes and a "homage to the professions". To the left and right you see the noble fountains. During the summer months, life between the flower beds and trees has almost a Mediterranean flair. Lawn areas are occupied by people in need of recreation who enjoy the central sunbathing area.
Often, this is also the venue for open air concerts and city festivals. Chestnut trees are planted in double rows from the wings of the castle to the Königsbau on the opposite side. In front there is the beautiful cast iron bandstand which dates back to 1871 and which is still used today for musical presentations. The audience can enjoy a cool drink in the surrounding cafes while listening to the virtuosic buskers. Next to the Königsbau, there is a distinctive glass building that houses the new gallery of the City of Stuttgart, which underlines the representative significance of the place.
